Today, 5 May 2018 marked the kick off of the official outdoor match season and boy has it been an exciting and fun-filled day of field hockey at the Helsinki Velodrome. We fielded our first ladies hockey team and even though they walked away with two losses it was a fantastic start to the season especially considering the fact that the majority of players had never previously played a match before. Even though pitted against more experienced teams, they maintained a positive outlook and tried their best and walked away from both matches with their heads held high.
The ladies played their first match against Vantaa and the second against Humppila. The ladies team did their best against an inspired Vantaa and bowed out with four goals to zero. In their second match against HT, they displayed better resolve and made some changes to their game cheered on by supporters on the sideline. The team eventually lost the match by 3 goals to 1. The first goal of the season for the ladies team was scored by Lizelle Masson.
We hope that the first taste of hockey has given the ladies a taste of what awaits them and that they are motivated and eager to continue an upward trajectory. A massive thank you to the players who were able to make the game today. Endang, Suzette, Lizelle, Martta, Taryn and Elisa, we appreciate the contributions made today and the spirit in which you competed today was fantastic.
The under 13 team also started their season and did so in usual fashion with incredible victories over the opponents from Humppila Hockey and Seinajoki United. Against Humppila the Warriors rained victorious by beating their counterparts by four goals to one. After a two and a half hour break, they clobbered Seinajoki United by 9 goals to 1. The goals scorers today were Manraj Singh with 5 goals to his credit, Jobanvir with 3 goals scored, Arjunit Singh and Gurdit Singh both with 2 goals and Aadit Phull with 1 goal in the pocket. This is an incredible start to the season and the teams can only move from strength to strength.
The under 13 players are currently tied with Vantaa HC at the top of the leaderboard with only goal difference separating the two teams. Both teams top the board with 6 points each after the end of play today.
